'Time for another tea party?'

As the foundations of America were being laid a group of men in Boston held a tea party to make a statement about taxation without representation.

Today more than ever after a month long series of both international and national legislative events there is vexation by our representation. Our health and health care choices are being vexed by representatives beholden more to special interests than they are to 'We, The People'.

Timeline

Only one month ago on Independence Day in America a United Nations commission meeting in Rome with the name Codex Alimentarius ratified an agreement to restrict dietary supplements without the American delegation uttering a sound.

Just last week passage of the CAFTA treaty in The House firmed the hold of Codex upon Americans and the potential to limit their choices of dietary supplements. This was accomplished by way of a small provision buried deep within Section 6 of the treaty.

The CAFTA bill was passed in the middle of the night without achieving a majority of 218 votes. Two that promised constituents they would vote against CAFTA changed their vote. That combined with two abstentions in the midst of a slew of last minute deals eked out a 217-215 minority passage of CAFTA. Thus 'We, The People' were unceremoniously dumped like so much tea in Boston Harbor.

Earlier that day a bill passed overwhelmingly that established a voluntary and confidential system for doctors to report medical errors without any liability. The staunchly pro-medical 'Institute of Medicine' has admitted a conservative figure of almost 100,000 deaths annually due to medical errors.

Yet another bill currently in The House seeks mandatory reporting of any suspected adverse effects of any kind from dietary supplement use. All the adverse effects -- whether deadly or not -- from every dietary supplement of every kind ever sold falls far short of the 100,000 deaths due to medical errors in only one single year.

Why are medical errors that kill tens of thousands legislated to be only voluntarily reported while dietary supplements with a much safer track record are being targeted for mandatory reporting?

Time's up?

A full-scale assault is being launched on dietary supplements as evidenced by the New England Journal of MediSin publication of a study against the herb echinacea last week on the same day that the previous bills were passed.

The study was conducted with only 60 per cent or 20 per cent alcohol extracts of echinacea roots. Roots require 100 per cent alcohol extraction.

The already too weak to be of value extract was then given only three times daily. That is not often enough to be effective.

The study further noted that each dose was equivalent to only 300 milligrams of echinacea root. That is barely half of a common capsule or tablet amount of products that call for two or more at a time.

This is comparable to conducting a study on headaches with aspirin usage in which only one-half of one aspirin were given instead of following directions that called for two aspirins in order to prove that aspirin won't alleviate a headache.

There were yet more flaws in the echinacea study. Suffice to say that study is one big phraud -- and p-h-r-a-u-d is the appropriate spelling for that pharmaceutical con.

The lead author of the echinacea study has been a paid consultant to numerous antibiotic manufacturers. Do you suppose those companies want to get back some of the $300 million by hook or crook that goes to echinacea sales annually?

Another bill being hurried through Congress would cap malpractice damages at $250,000 just as Merck is in the midst of only the first of thousands of lawsuits over its Vioxx that has been implicated in tens of thousands of deaths annually.

Another study this week notes that 18,000 women annually may die because of heart deaths attributed to their ovaries being removed as a "preventative" measure. This "news" is actually something I learned from an old OB-GYN more than 25 years ago. That medical doctor had learned this more than 40 years before that from studies at his alma mater -- the highly regarded then as now Johns Hopkins medical school.

With all of these deaths due to medical "care" why are there so many assaults on dietary supplements?

Tea time?

One group has called for a 'Washington Tea Party'. Perhaps they are on to something. Check them out Here.

Perhaps it is not too late to protect our rights, protect our health, and establish health care freedom of choice.
